Charlotte Land Works connects property owners with local crews for demolition & debris removal, excavation, land clearing and site preparation across the Charlotte area. Small-structure demolition and cleanup often comes before any new build or land sale.
Common demolition jobs
- Old sheds, carports, outbuildings and collapsing barns
- Abandoned or end-of-life mobile homes
- Concrete slabs, footings, patios and old driveways
- Swimming pool removal and backfill
- Fallen trees, storm debris and illegal dump piles on rural land
Permits and pre-demolition checks
Demolition permits
Many jurisdictions require a demolition permit for structures, plus utility disconnect confirmation from power, gas and water providers.
Asbestos
North Carolina requires an asbestos inspection by an accredited inspector before demolition of most structures, with notification to the state for regulated jobs. Older homes and barns may have asbestos in siding, roofing, flooring or pipe wrap. South Carolina has similar requirements.
Septic and wells
Abandoned septic tanks and wells need to be properly closed, which follows county health department rules.
Equipment
Excavators with thumbs or demolition grapples, hydraulic breakers for concrete, skid steers for sorting and loading, and roll-off dumpsters or dump trucks.
Sorting and disposal
Separating metal for recycling, clean concrete for crushing, and wood and mixed debris for the construction and demolition landfill lowers disposal cost. Concrete can sometimes be crushed and reused on-site as base material.
Typical process
- Confirm utility disconnects, permits and any asbestos survey
- Remove salvage and hazardous items (fuel, tires, chemicals)
- Demolish structure and break up slabs
- Sort and load debris for recycling or disposal
- Remove footings, backfill and compact voids
- Grade and stabilize the area
Leaving the site build-ready
The difference between demolition and site-ready demolition is the backfill. Footing trenches, basement voids and pool shells filled with compacted soil — not loose rubble — let the next builder start without surprises.
