Charlotte Land Works helps landowners find local operators for land clearing, forestry mulching, grading, excavation and driveway work around Charlotte. Land clearing here means acreage: two acres behind a farmhouse in Mint Hill, ten acres for a shop and home site outside Monroe, or a development tract in Cabarrus County.
Choosing a clearing method
Conventional clearing and grubbing
Dozers with root rakes and excavators with thumbs push over trees, pull stumps and stack material into windrows. It produces bare ground ready for grading — the right choice where buildings, roads and lawns will go.
Mechanical mulching
A mulching head on a tracked carrier grinds vegetation in place. It's faster on brushy land and leaves erosion-resistant cover, but stumps remain. See our forestry mulching page for details.
Selective clearing
Marked trees stay; everything else goes. Common on homestead tracts where owners want shade, wildlife cover or a wooded buffer along the road.
Timber, debris and disposal
On larger tracts with merchantable pine, a forester or timber buyer may cruise the stand before clearing — sometimes timber value offsets part of the cost. Hardwood logs, tops and stumps still have to go somewhere: hauling, tub grinding into mulch, or burning where county rules and NC Forest Service burn permits allow it. Plan this early, since disposal is often the largest single line item.
Permits and environmental limits
- Erosion and sediment control plan for one acre or more of disturbance (NCDEQ or a delegated local program; SCDES in South Carolina)
- Riparian and stream buffers along creeks and in watershed overlays
- Wetlands: clearing or filling them can require federal (Army Corps) review
- Farm and forestry exemptions exist but don't cover converting land to a house site
Equipment you'll see on site
Mid-size dozers (D5–D6 class) with root rakes, 20- to 30-ton excavators with hydraulic thumbs, skid steers with grapple buckets, and log trucks or roll-off containers. On wet clay, low-ground-pressure tracks keep machines from rutting the site.
Process from walk-through to finished ground
- Site walk to flag boundaries, keeper trees, wet areas and access
- Perimeter erosion control and construction entrance
- Fell and process merchantable timber first, if any
- Clear and grub, stacking debris into windrows
- Dispose of debris by hauling, grinding or permitted burning
- Rake roots and rocks, rough grade, then stabilize with seed and straw
Durability: what keeps cleared land cleared
Cleared Piedmont land grows back quickly — sweetgum and pine seedlings return within one season. Getting grass established right away, or following clearing with a regular mowing or bush-hogging schedule, is what keeps the investment from turning back into thicket.
