Charlotte Land Works connects pond owners with crews for pond clearing & dredging, brush clearing, drainage and excavation across the Charlotte area. Farm and neighborhood ponds throughout Mecklenburg, Union and Cabarrus counties slowly fill with sediment from clay runoff.
Signs a pond needs work
- Shallow edges and mud flats where water used to be deep
- Dense cattails, willows or trees along banks and dams
- Algae blooms and weed growth in warm months
- Seepage, sinkholes or a failing overflow pipe
Clearing banks and dams
Trees and woody brush on an earthen dam are a real risk: roots can create seepage paths, and a fallen tree can leave a void. Dam faces are typically kept in mowable grass. Bank clearing also improves access for fishing and maintenance.
Dredging methods
Drain-and-dig
The pond is lowered or drained, sediment dries, then excavators and dump trucks remove it. Most common for small farm ponds.
Long-reach excavation
Long-reach excavators remove sediment from the bank without fully draining.
Hydraulic dredging
A floating dredge pumps sediment slurry to dewatering bags or a settling area. Used on larger ponds or where draining isn't possible.
Permits and dam safety
Larger dams in North Carolina can fall under the state dam safety program, and ponds connected to streams or wetlands may need federal or state review before work. Work on HOA ponds often needs board approval and stormwater considerations. Your provider can explain what typically applies.
What happens to the sediment
Pond muck is wet and heavy. It's usually spread and dried on-site, then graded into fields or used as fill outside building areas. Hauling it off is possible but adds cost.
Process
- Assess depth, sediment volume, dam and outlet condition
- Clear banks and dam vegetation
- Lower water or set up dredge
- Remove sediment and reshape the pond bottom and banks
- Repair or replace outlet pipe and spillway protection
- Seed and stabilize disturbed banks
Keeping it from refilling
Most sediment comes from upstream. Grassed buffers, a sediment forebay at the inlet, and stabilized ditches upstream can dramatically extend the time before the next dredge.
