Charlotte Land Works connects landowners with crews for fence line clearing, brush clearing, forestry mulching and land clearing across the Charlotte area. Fence line clearing opens a straight, even corridor along a boundary so a fence can be built, repaired or maintained.
Why clear before fencing
Fence installers need a clean, fairly level path to set posts, run wire or rails and drive equipment. Clearing also removes trees that would later fall on the fence and vines that pull it down.
Corridor widths
- Residential privacy or picket fence: often a few feet on the build side
- Pasture woven wire or board fence: commonly 8–12 feet to fit a post driver and tractor
- Perimeter lines on acreage: wider corridors double as a maintenance path or firebreak
Property lines first
Survey
Fence lines should follow surveyed boundaries. Many owners have a surveyor flag the line before clearing begins, especially where old fences are no longer on the true line.
Neighbors
Clearing exactly on a boundary affects both sides. A conversation with the neighbor — and clearing only on your side unless agreed — avoids disputes.
Methods
Mulching
A skid-steer mulcher clears brush and small trees and leaves a usable path in one pass.
Saw work and chipping
Larger trees along the line are felled, chipped or hauled, with stumps ground flush for post placement.
Old fence removal
Rusted wire, T-posts and rotten wood posts are pulled and hauled before the new fence goes in.
Process
- Confirm the line with survey flags
- Remove old fencing and wire
- Fell larger trees away from the line
- Mulch or cut brush along the corridor
- Grind stumps flush and smooth the path
Keeping the line open
A fence line stays clear with mowing or bush-hogging once or twice a year. Leaving a corridor wide enough for a mower is the biggest factor in long-term upkeep.
