Charlotte Land Works connects owners of existing gravel drives with crews for driveway grading & repair, new driveway installation, drainage work and grading around Charlotte. Repair is a different job than new construction: the goal is to reuse the stone already there and fix the reason it failed.
Diagnosing the failure
Potholes
Water ponds in a low spot, traffic splashes out the fines, and the hole grows. The fix is restoring crown so water can't sit.
Washboarding
Ripples across the drive from loose surface stone and acceleration or braking. Regrading with fines mixed back in, then compacting, usually solves it.
Ruts and soft spots
Clay pumping up through the stone means the base is too thin or there's no separation fabric. Those sections may need excavation and rebuilding.
Washouts
Gullies down the middle or edges mean water is running along the driveway instead of across or off it. Water bars, turnouts or a culvert are the cure.
Repair methods
- Scarifying: ripping the top few inches with a box blade's shanks to loosen stone and fines
- Regrading: pulling stone back from the edges to the center and re-establishing crown
- Compaction: rolling the regraded surface so fines bind
- Top-dressing: adding fresh ABC where stone has been lost
- Spot rebuilds: digging out failed sections and replacing base over fabric
Culverts and ditches
Many failing drives have a culvert that's crushed, rusted through or packed with sediment. Clearing or replacing it, and re-cutting the side ditch, can stop the damage at its source.
Equipment
Compact track loaders with box blades or land planes handle most residential drives. Longer rural drives may get a small motor grader. A smooth-drum vibratory roller finishes the surface.
A typical repair visit
- Walk the drive after rain if possible to see where water collects
- Clean ditches and culvert inlets
- Scarify and regrade to restore a crown of roughly a few percent
- Add stone where needed and compact
- Add water bars or turnouts on steeper sections
How long a repair holds
With drainage corrected, a regraded gravel drive typically stays smooth for several seasons. Light annual grading after winter — when freeze-thaw cycles and heavy rains do the most damage — is the cheapest long-term maintenance.
