Charlotte Land Works connects property owners with operators who handle forestry mulching, brush clearing, land clearing and grading throughout the Charlotte area. Forestry mulching is the one-machine method: a carrier with a rotating toothed drum chews standing vegetation into a layer of wood chips right where it grew.
Where mulching makes the most sense
- Overgrown lots you want to see and walk before deciding how to build
- Pasture that has gone to sweetgum, cedar and blackberry
- Chinese privet and bush honeysuckle thickets under hardwoods
- Trails, hunting lanes, firebreaks and survey lines
- Steeper ground where bulldozing would expose bare clay
The machines
Skid-steer mulchers
High-flow compact track loaders with 60- to 70-inch heads. They fit through gates and work well on residential lots, typically handling stems up to around 6 to 8 inches.
Dedicated carriers
Purpose-built mulching tractors with larger engines can take trees in the 10- to 12-inch range and cover acreage much faster. They need wider access and a lowboy trailer to move.
Drum and tooth types
Fixed carbide teeth hold up better around the rocks common in Union County's slate belt; knife-style teeth produce finer mulch but dull faster in dirty conditions.
Why it suits Piedmont clay
Cecil-series clay loams sheds water quickly once bare. Because mulching leaves roots in the ground and lays down a mulch blanket, runoff slows and sediment stays put. On many residential jobs that means less silt fence and no seeding afterward.
Limits to know
Mulching leaves stumps flush or slightly above grade, so it doesn't prepare a foundation or driveway subgrade by itself. A thick mulch layer also ties up nitrogen as it breaks down, so lawns planted directly over it struggle. Where turf is the goal, crews can thin the mulch or follow with a soil conditioner.
How a mulching job runs
- Walk the property and flag keeper trees, wells, septic lids and property pins
- Mulch the perimeter first to define the work area
- Work in lanes, making a second pass for finer finish where wanted
- Grind stumps of larger felled trees if requested
- Blow off hardscape and leave a uniform mulch layer
How long results last
Expect the mulch layer to break down over one to three years, enriching the topsoil. Woody regrowth from stumps — especially sweetgum and privet — is common in the first season; a follow-up pass or spot herbicide by a licensed applicator keeps the area open.
