Charlotte Land Works helps homeowners find installers for gravel driveway installation, driveway repair, grading and drainage across the Charlotte area. A new gravel drive is only as good as what's under the stone, and on red clay that means real excavation and a shaped base.
Driveway cross-section, layer by layer
- Subgrade: topsoil and organics removed to firm mineral soil, shaped with a crown
- Geotextile: woven stabilization fabric on soft or wet clay to separate soil from stone
- Base: ABC (aggregate base course, also called crusher run) placed and compacted in lifts
- Surface: more ABC for the hardest wearing surface, or #57 or #67 stone for a cleaner look
Choosing stone in the Carolinas
ABC / crusher run
A blend of crushed granite from about 1.5 inches down to fines. The fines lock together when compacted, which makes it the standard base and the most stable surface.
#57 stone
Clean, roughly 3/4- to 1-inch stone. It drains freely and looks tidy but rolls under tires and migrates without a good base under it.
Washed or decorative stone
River rock and pea gravel look good near a house but don't lock up for vehicle traffic and are best kept to walkways and borders.
Drainage features that save driveways
A crown or cross-slope moves water off the surface. Side ditches carry it away. Where the drive crosses a swale, a culvert — usually corrugated HDPE pipe with headwalls or riprap at each end — passes water under the drive. Connecting to a state-maintained road typically requires an NCDOT driveway permit, and NCDOT may set the culvert size at the ditch line.
Width, length and turning
Single-lane residential drives are usually 10 to 12 feet wide; add width at curves and a turnaround or hammerhead near the house so delivery trucks and fire apparatus can maneuver.
Installation process
- Lay out the alignment and grade, avoiding wet spots where possible
- Clear and strip topsoil down to firm subgrade
- Shape crown, cut ditches and set culverts
- Lay fabric if needed, then spread and compact base stone with a vibratory roller
- Apply top stone and dress the shoulders with topsoil and seed
Durability and upkeep
A properly built drive needs little more than a light top-dressing and regrade every few years. Potholes almost always signal water sitting on or under the stone, so fix drainage first before adding gravel.
