Excavation in Charlotte, NC

Charlotte Land Works connects builders and property owners with excavation contractors, plus crews for site preparation, grading, demolition and drainage across the Charlotte region. Excavation is precision digging to a plan: depths, widths and elevations that the next trade depends on.

Typical excavation work

Soil and rock in the region

Clay and saprolite

Under the red clay subsoil lies saprolite — weathered rock that still shows the original rock structure. It digs with a bucket but can be unpredictable when wet.

Rock

Partially weathered rock and solid rock appear in places, especially in the Carolina slate belt across parts of Union County and near some creek valleys. Hydraulic breakers handle most residential rock; larger quantities may change cost significantly.

Safety standards

OSHA requires protective systems — sloping, benching, shoring or trench boxes — for most trenches 5 feet or deeper. Competent-person inspections and spoil piles set back from the edge are standard practice for professional crews.

Equipment

Mini-excavators

For trenches, tight access and small footings.

Mid-size excavators

For basements, pools and bulk excavation, paired with dump trucks to haul spoil.

Laser levels

Rotating lasers or machine control to hold footing and trench grades.

Process

Durable results

Footing bottoms on undisturbed soil, backfill compacted in lifts and drainage stone against foundation walls are what keep cracks and wet basements from showing up years later.
