Stump Grinding in Charlotte, NC

Charlotte Land Works connects homeowners with stump grinding operators and with crews for stump removal, land clearing and grading across the Charlotte area. Stump grinding uses a spinning carbide-toothed wheel to chip the stump away below ground level, leaving the roots to decay naturally.

When grinding is the right call

If a slab, footing, driveway or septic field will go over the spot, consider full stump removal instead.

Grinding depth

Most residential grinding goes roughly 4 to 8 inches below grade — enough for sod or seed. Deeper grinding, around a foot, is common when planting a new tree or shrub nearby. Surface roots radiating from the stump can be ground out along with it.

Grinder sizes

Walk-behind and tracked compact grinders

Fit through 36-inch gates and handle most yard stumps. Tracks protect turf on soft ground.

Tow-behind and self-propelled units

More horsepower for large hardwood stumps — oaks over 30 inches are common in older Charlotte neighborhoods.

Species matter

Oak and hickory grind slowly and leave dense chips. Pine grinds quickly but resin-heavy stumps can be stubborn. Sweetgum and some other species may sprout from roots after grinding, which can be handled with follow-up treatment.

What happens to the grindings

The chip pile is roughly two to three times the stump volume. Options are to leave it in the hole, spread it as mulch in beds, or haul it away and backfill with topsoil. Grindings left in place will sink as they decompose and tie up nitrogen, so topsoil is the better base for grass.

Process

What to expect long-term

Roots below the ground decay over several years; a slight depression may appear and can be topped up with soil. Grinding stumps soon after tree removal also reduces the habitat termites and carpenter ants look for near a home.
